SEATTLE – Amazon Prime Day will likely happen this June as the company announces record earnings for the first quarter.

“On the timing, last year, we had intended to hold Prime Day earlier,” said Brian Olsavsky, Amazon CFO, on the quarterly earnings call. “There are a number of factors, the Olympics, which are still out there this year. In fact, in many areas, July is a big vacation month. So, it might be better for customers, sellers and vendors to experiment with a different time period.”

Olsavsky added that the company experimented the other way in 2020 by moving Prime Day into October, but they now believe that it might be a better timing later in Q2 in the June timeframe.

The company also announced that it has expanded Discover Rooms, an immersive shopping experience that helps customers browse and shop from thousands of home room designs and instantly discover home furnishing product inspiration based on visual attributes. The experience is now available in nine countries, including Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Spain, UK and the U.S.

For the first quarter, Amazon reported net sales of $108.5 billion and an earnings per share of $15.79. The company’s first-quarter results showed it continues to be helped by the pandemic, with sales growing 44% compared with last year.

The company’s operating income increased to $8.9 billion in the first quarter, compared with operating income of $4.0 billion in first quarter 2020. And, net income increased to $8.1 billion in the first quarter, compared with net income of $2.5 billion in first quarter 2020.

For the second quarter, the company’s guidance shows that it expects to post earnings between $110 billion and $116 billion which would be a year-over-year increase of between 24% and 30%.
